Artificial intelligence technology today generally refers to systems trained to recognize patterns in immense quantities of real-world data. The approach is revolutionizing computing, producing useful results in recognizing images, screening spam, preventing fraud and controlling self-driving cars.

The competition took notice. Soon after Zoom's rapid rise in the early days of the pandemic, on its video chat service Teams. The company's consumer chat service Skype also got a new free video chat feature called . Google began offering a free version of its enterprise video chat service Meet. Even Facebook got in on the action, releasing a new consumer video chat feature called , allowing for free video chats with up to 50 people. Dall-E, though, brings some creative flair to the idea. Text prompts like "a painting of hipster dogs playing poker, in the style of Tomma Abts" can produce entertaining and sometimes intriguing results. It's a powerful illustration of the growing capability and utility of AI.

Over the last year, Zoom has also added autogenerated captions for better accessibility, attendance status information for hosts, two-way chatting in the waiting room, more control to stop incoming video and optimization for the newer MacBook Pro. The meeting software also added games like poker and Kahoot. 

As a meeting host, you can create smaller breakout rooms, and enable much-needed security settings like a waiting room (more on that below). Depending on which tier of the service you pay for, you can host up to 1,000 participants. 

"We take seriously the trust our users place in us every day, particularly as they rely on us to keep them connected through this unprecedented global crisis, and we continuously improve our security and privacy programs," a Zoom spokesperson said. "We are proud of the advancements we have made to our platform, and we have already addressed the issues identified by the FTC."

One possible sticking point could be if people are using their Fed accounts to purchase illicit goods, such as cannabis. While states across the country have legalized cannabis for medical and recreational use, it's still illegal on a federal level. If someone purchased the substance from a dispensary using digital dollars, the government could theoretically decide to impose criminal sanctions for the transaction. 

Already the service was in widespread use, with 1.5 million people making more than 2 million images a day, OpenAI said in a blog post. Now others who requested access should have it granted, and anyone can sign up.

Another illustration of the difficulty came when a Colorado man won a digital art contest with an AI work from Midjourney. Getty Images, a business that licenses imagery, banned AI-generated creations in September.

Tech giants are investing deeply in AI technology. Later this week, Tesla plans to hold an AI Day event where it's expected to detail its Optimus humanoid robot and FSD technology it hopes will lead to self-driving cars.

Trying to prevent AI image abuse OpenAI, which says its mission is "to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity," emphasizes controls designed to prevent people from abusing Dall-E's capabilities. That means no sexual or violent content or attempts to create images of public figures. OpenAI has a whole system to help moderators detect problems automatically.

Zoom is also relatively stable compared to other video call services -- unless your internet connection is wonky, it usually works smoothly. This is anecdotal evidence, but I've had fewer connection interruptions and lag issues using Zoom than other platforms, and have heard the same from my coworkers -- even as we approach the two-year mark of the pandemic. 

Not all tools have those kinds of limits. That's raised hackles in some quarters. US Rep. Anna Eshoo, a Democrat representing much of Silicon Valley, called for controls on generative AI art tools after Stable Diffusion was used "to create photos of violently beaten Asian women and pornography depicting real people," she said in a Sept. 22 letter.
