Roleplay Cost Reminder

Post by Talia » Tue Jul 16, 2019 10:51 pm

Hey Guys!

I wanted to touch base on a general concern that rises more frequently than not.

Like not paying the energy, willpower, virtue, or health costs in the game, skipping the roleplay cost is also cheating. The cost is not arbitrary and is intended to help people identify what is happening in a given scene, just like packets or other meta calls. This also allows us to provide sensory powers that do not cost energy per use, without making such a thing free.

Some powers, instead of costing sheet resources, require roleplay for a specific amount of time and generally have a type that is necessary.

For example, sense health. While it is free of resources on your character sheet you still need to spend 10 seconds staring intently at your target. Staring intently is not done while carrying on a conversation casually, though certainly you may talk while locking your eyes on theirs and being a creep. It is not while actively fighting, you cannot stare into their soul with hyperfixation while also blocking and calculating their attack. It should be very pointedly and very obvious. The intent behind this is to make it harder to be subtle, to let other characters catch the weird and uncomfortable stares.

10 seconds doesn't seem like a long time, but in a live scene it can feel like eternity. Here's an example of 10 seconds.

One thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, one thousand four... adding the 'one thousand' beside each number will help you track it.

Some roleplay costs require a full 60 seconds. This IS an eternity, especially while trying to revive someone or do minimum 60 seconds of ritual roleplay even after the 10 second incantation in Latin is done. Another power, Meditate, requires you to sit down and ponder deeply for 60 uninterrupted seconds before you gain the benefit.

This is a gentle and loving reminder to please pay attention to the time spent doing these things. If you forego this cost you've cheated not only the game, but yourself.

Thank you much!
