A power inverter to give you mains power from your batteries. On small boats you will be limited by the size of your battery bank. Our 30 foot boat has 4 leisure batteries and a 1500 watt inverter. We find that when cruising we can manage on an overnight basis to live in a civilized fashion, but we do not have the power to use an automatic washer for instance. This has to wait either until we get mains power or find a launderette.

11am: Find rendezvous point at last after many wrong turns, and many angry words shouted by our driver down the phone to the houseboat guide. The guide seems to have the more believable story: "Your driver, my God, what a crack man! I told him so many times, left at the bridge!" After all bags are unpacked and on the house barge for sale, decide not to tip driver.



During the prior two weeks in Scotland, I checked the BBC's weather report every night. And every night the weather and the forecast in Wales were the same. Rain, wind, and more rain. It was looking like a soggy six days were in front of us. But we were committed, had paid our outfitter in advance and there didn't seem to be anything we could do other than to make sure we moved our rain suits from our golf bags to our rucksack.

Visit Dodman's Point and take a walk to see the beautiful scenery this area of Cornwall provides. There is a ferry and it is fun to go out on just to see the scenery in the harbor. You can also rent boats to just take a spin out on the harbor.

The city is located on the banks of the River Great Ouse in an area known as The Fens. It was a busy inland port up until the eighteenth century at which time the area was drained. The river still draws many people; there is a boating area with a large marina. The famous University of Cambridge rowing team retains a boathouse on the river and often uses it to train for their prestigious race against the University of Oxford.

It makes sense to buy a boat trailer that is over-rated for the weight of your boat, stronger than needed, as this gives you room for errors, which can occur entering or exiting tricky drive-ways, or bumpy roads.

On the counter where I'd left them the afternoon before, a pair of wrap-around sunglasses, handed to me off-handedly by Gary at the end of a Labor Day party, just because I had mentioned that I liked them. In the drawer, a deck of playing cards with which I have ungraciously conceded several hundred dollars in quarters, dimes and nickels to better poker players.
