A power inverter to give you mains power from your batteries. On small boats you will be limited by the size of your battery bank. Our 30 foot boat has 4 leisure batteries and a 1500 watt inverter. We find that when cruising we can manage on an overnight basis to live in a civilized fashion, but we do not have the power to use an automatic washer for instance. This has to wait either until we get mains power or find a launderette.

The first thing I wanted to find out was how expensive it would be to put a pontoon houseboat diy on the water and to moor it (to dock the boat) at a place close to home. I put a small ad up on Kijiji, (an on-line classified) seeking a spot to moor the boat for the summer. In a short time I was offered four locations from Marina operators (and one cottager who had dock space). I chose the location on a lake which was close to a favourite town of ours called Buckhorn, only a half hour from home. The resort is gorgeous and the cost for mooring for the summer is an amazing $500.00 for the season. The other locations all averaged around $800. for the season, still, a great deal for season-long access to the water.



It seems that folks cannot take second mortgages as easy due to real estate calamity. Yacht sales companies complain that they have cut prices and staff to adjust to the fewer sales stating some boats are selling at 1998 prices now and expect a further drop. Perhaps if you have the money, it is time to invest in that boat of your dreams now or in the near future.

Be informed and educated about boats and buying boats. If you just jump into it without any preparation you will definitely get burned. Before you even think of getting a boat you should have significant boating experience. If you don't then it is very important to study boater education and your state's boater education exam. You'll have to check your state's boating laws and regulations. Boating is very different than just hopping in a car and driving. You must be educated on boating responsibilities and have the skills to safely operate a boat.

This has been run as a farm and hotel since the 1600's and is today run by a husband and wife couple. The hotel is located on banks of the Fretheim Fjord and has its own boathouse, jetty and rowing boat. Each room in the hotel is complete with its own wood burning fire, hot tub, satellite television and room service. The stunning setting of the hotel makes this one of Norway's best. Rooms available from $800 per week.

Avoid Debt. Most people buy a boat on credit and extend the payments over several years. If you build your own boat, you can buy supplies and materials only as you can afford them. When your boat is completed, you will own it free and clear.

First, decide if you are primarily going to use this boat trailer to take it from the marina to a storage location; or if you are going to use the trailer to take your boat to another recreational spot from time to time? If the later, you'll want a decent tacking trailer for highway speeds. If not, you'll simply want a super tough, tank-like platform which can distribute the weight evenly over many months.
