My Video Games Can Hurt My Eyes

Whether it’s on your phone, tablet, PC, or television, chances are you’ve played some kind of video game recently. From Candy Crush to Angry Birds to Minecraft, video gaming long ago entered - and conquered - the mainstream.



What does this mean for your eyesight? Is it true that video games are not good for your eyes?



<b>Computer Vision Syndrome </b>



You may experience short-term eye damage from prolonged gaming sessions on video. This is due to what is known as the American Optometric Association calls computer vision syndrome, also known as digital eye strain. Excessive use of digital devices like computers and tablets can lead to eye strain, headaches dry eye, and fatigue in your shoulders and neck.



This is caused by a number of factors, such as glare and low screen contrast making your eyes be more active than they normally are. Computer vision syndrome is more prevalent in video games as opposed to when you use your devices for normal activities.



Eye strain can be reduced by using the right lighting. Make sure to take frequent breaks to refresh your eyes, blink often and make sure you have enough light to reduce glare. It could appear like you aren't getting enough power however your eyes will thank you.

The increase in 3D gaming has brought a new set of concerns, which were exacerbated when Nintendo issued an advisory that children under the age of 6 should not be allowed play in the 3D mode on Nintendo's portable 3DS game console. But that's not all the ways video games could actually help your eyesight. According to National Institute of Health studies, playing video games can boost important aspects of visual processing, including spatial resolution. This means that gamers can see things clearlyer and more clear. Some doctors have even employed videogame therapy to correct amblyopia (also known as lazy eye)



So go on and play video games. Make sure to play in moderation. You can never have too many positive things to look at when it comes to your eyes.
