Introduction

Glaine ár gcroí (Purity of our hearts)

Neart ár ngéag (Strength of our limbs)

Beart de réir ár mbriathar (Action to match our speech)

We are whom we will ever be and always been whom we shall be. Sounds a little deep there don't it. But what does it mean to you? That's what I am here to help you see. First is the understanding of your tribal name: Fianna. Some from outside the Tribe would attribute it to the Fae, however it truly honors Fionn mac Cumhail and his followers. You see, Fionn mac Cumhail, besides being a great hero of the people and Kinfolk, was a stanch protector of the land. Protection of the land and Gaia's bounty runs in your blood. Caretakers of the lakes and streams. Watchers in the mist over the ancient sites and hollow hills. Guardians of not only the land, but the spirit of the world as well. So, get a drink and listen well. All too soon this will be your story to tell...

History

The tales are long and varied, we could talk until your grandchildren grew old. But there is no time for that, you can use that to bond with your Tribemates, Septmates and Packmates. Enough of our Tribe talks to much, for which we are blessed and cursed. I will tell you of the history that has shaped those that you will interact with. Your Elders, Alphas and peers, they have heard this or lived this. You will add to the history of our Tribe and one day the Galliards will sing your tales. Treat those around you with respect and strive for renown, then the tales will show you in good light. Also understand that we, as a Tribe, have not always been in the good light.

You will repent for the actions taken by those dead Elders that caused the War of Rage. Accept this and work past it. The Fera hate you for what you are even though you never did anything, and rarely was anything done to them directly. Most of those who caused it and most of those who were effected by it are dead, but tales and memory are long.

The race of Man fear you. We hunted and lorded over them when they first began to pull themselves from the muck. But now they are numerous and not all will succumb to the Delirium; those are the ones to worry about. They seek comfort with their 'One God' and try, successfully at times, to convert our Kinfolk from the Old Ways.

We followed the Children of Danu to the Emerald Isles. You would know them as the Fae. Our blood is touched by theirs, we owed them fealty at times and were cast off at others. One thing that has always been the same is that we will not harm them or their kin unless ancient oaths are broken. Respect them. Fear what they could do.

Not all children are not born alone and neither were the Fae. The other bloodline were the Children of Domnu, also known as the Fomorians. The corrupted and twisted Wyrm spawn that you know as the Fomori are but shadows of echos of Domnu's children. We fought them in our homelands and we beat them. But the Wyrm learned from their existence, and created the Fomori in their image. Now we fight for the bodies and souls of our Kinfolk and Man.

The Wyrm has started a great war with the children of Gaia, but the first to feel the sting of that war was us. They tempted and tricked our brothers, the White Howlers. They fell to the Wyrm in their own hubris, followed it down into the Tainted caves and what came out was nothing ever seen before. The defiled Howlers and their kinfolk were no more they had become the Fallen. We weep for their loss and watch the other Tribes for signs of their fall. Kill them all; show no mercy to the Fallen.

As we mourned the loss of the White Howlers, one of our tenuous allies turned on us. Seeing what they though as a weakness in our Tribe, the Fenrir started a war with us that lasted for 500 years that finally ended in 1014 at the battle of Colntarf. We do not hate them, for they worried we would also fall, or slip in out duty to Gaia. They were wrong; dead wrong. We will not allow any to take our homeland without a fight.

These are some of the tales of our Tribe. You have been born to a family rich as kings in tales. Born in a time of great change. If you crave more go to your Galliards and Tribemates, they can all provide pieces to the puzzled heart of the Fianna.

Geography

Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Brittany. These are the places we call home.

Scotland to today is a country as wild still as her people. A savage place unmarred by the Romans, and hungered after by the English. Once under thrall of the Fallen White Howlers, they have all been driven back into their caves. With the Fianna roaming the Highlands and the Fenrir guarding the coastal islands and southern lowlands. Few others find welcome beyond Hadrain's Wall.

Wales is a land divided. Silver Fangs and Fenrir coupled with the human cultures of Roman, Saxon and Norman invaders have crashed like waves upon Wales. The Fianna of the Welsh Marches are mostly made up of Norman and Welsh. Brittany is mostly held by the Fenrir. The Silver Fangs have taken some of the best places with the Norman conquerors. The Fianna hold the southwest, with strong control over the Caerns in Cornwall. And the Midlands are a melting pot of Fenrir and Fianna. But Ireland is unquestionably the stronghold of our Tribe. The two most known Septs in the British Isles are the unique three caerned Sept of Tri-Spiral and the fabled Sept of Silver Tara, home to our Tribe's Ard Righ or High King. Until the coming of the Normans the only real invasion was a failure by the Fenrir. For over a century we have held this land since, except for the occasional roaming Silent Strider or Child of Gaia no other Garou have set foot here.

Totems of the Tribe

Stag, Totem of Respect: Primary Totem Spirit to the Fianna Tribe. Stag represents a connection to the wilderness like no other. He is associated with masculinity, virility, and the wild raw power of nature. Those running under packs dedicated to Stag can call upon the enduring force in the ability to survive, and can push themselves like no other in feats of running for long distances. However, whether it be in a pack, or as one of his children, Stag demands that you show respect for your prey. Many learn to perform or have performed for them the Rite of Prayer for the Prey after they have a successful hunt. Children of Stag must also always aid the Fae.

Fintan, the Salmon of Knowledge: Totem of Wisdom; Spiritual Aspect of the Greater Totem Salmon. It is told that Fintan the Salmon consumed the hazelnuts from the Tree of Knowledge and was thus imbued with all knowledge and wisdom. He was finally caught by the druid Finegas, who knew that whomever ate the salmon would receive all his wisdom. Commanding the young Fionn mac Cumhail to cook the salmon. During this, Fionn burned his thumb on the sizzling fish and sucked the wound to ease the pain. This however caused him to gain all of the fish's knowledge.

Auspice roles in the Tribe

Ragabash

Questioners. Tricksters. Fools. Just a few words you would hear describing the Ragabash. All are correct, as are none of them. They are more than just joke makers. They relieve stress and help to blow off steam. Ours also have the name 'kingmaker', with the duty to watch our leaders and elders to see if they can hold their own. It is said that if an Alpha can withstand breaking from the actions and questions of the renowned 'kingmakers', they are then as a leader should be: above reproach. Beyond that, they teach us the proper ways to handle the Litany and are even known to be devils to fight.

Theurge

Out of the whole Celtic heritage, comes the shepherds of the land. We taught the first humans what it means to be with Gaia. The tales told of the humans and their Druids are about our Theurges, not some mystic lost in the woods cutting mistletoe, but true defenders of the land. They will do whatever it takes to appease the spirits. Kill a man from town by the threefold death of hanging, stabbing and whipping, just to toss his body in a peat bog to appease the spirits. Done. They awake the trees and the land to fight the Wyrm. We hold a strong tie to the land, but for our Theurges there is more than that: rooting out spiritual and psychological corruption. We watched one Tribe fall to the Wyrm, and our Theurges are not going to let that happen again.

Philodox

We are a passionate bunch, lead by heart and soul more than brain and reason, but someone has to rein us in. That is handled by those that walk the fine line between light and dark, Rage and reason, the Philodox. They are leaders during peace, advisers during war, and judges whenever and wherever they're needed. They also police our morals. It is a long night for the Philodox after a Fianna festival, watching for the possibilities of interbreeding. And along those same lines they handle our matchmaking, setting up matches between Fianna and Kin. It is a thankless duty that the Philodox have, but they are the most resolute of our Tribe.

Galliard

Born from a Tribe of bards. The Totem Galliard, magnificent child of Luna, herself has blessed us with the inspiration to lead the songs and tales of millennia. They are the keepers of our and all the Garou history. The recording and remembering of the Silver Record, a devising from the Silver Fangs, is solely handled by our Tribe. Our Galliards can lead war cries that will put the fear of Gaia into anyone. You can tell a Fianna pack is going into battle by the howls and songs that precede the charge. The crafting to verse and the blending of melody is the bread and butter of our Galliards. It is said, and rightly so, that the Garou language was born in the heart of our first Galliards and sung to the winds in howls heard across countries.

Ahroun

We as Garou are the warriors and protectors of Gaia, but out of a race of warriors Luna chose to bless those greatest with her Rage. The Ahrouns are those great warriors amongst warriors. But ours take a different look at it. We train not just to fight but to be bards as are all our Tribe, and to be the knights of the Sidhe Lords. Champions striding to Glory, armored in Honor and lead by Wisdom. It is a harsh life and short to boot. We place ourselves at the front of the lines to make sure you survive. As a passionate Tribe, coupled with the amount of the Rage the we have to endure, sometimes that partying is more about celebrating the life we have than just getting drunk. If you're going to die, you want to enjoy life while you can. Nobody can celebrate life like one of us.

Opinions

Humans: We are one of the few Tribes with the strongest ties between ourselves and our Kinfolk. We treat them almost as if they were really Garou. The love of family is one strong trait of the Fianna that is felt and shared by our Kinfolk. As they are our strength so too are they one of our greatest weaknesses. Recently the Defiler Wyrm has tried to twist the relations between our Kinfolk, focusing on them for its predations rather than our Caerns or Packs. This has caused few to fall to Harano, the killing depression.

Other than our Kinfolk, we have not strong relations with other human cultures. Magic in the Emerald Isles is strong, and lends itself to a semi-natural acceptance of the strangeness of our world. This has led to some taking up of the Old Ways and following the Druidic traditions. But with the rise of Christianity, even they are swayed to the worship of the 'One God'.

Fianna starting information about Fae

Fae: We have the greatest connection with the Fae out of any. Lore tells that our bloodline specifically comes from the Tuatha de Dannan, the Oathkeepers of the Fae. This does not make us any less Garou, just gives us more allies. We hold the Old Ways sacred, we teach them to others so they may respect the world around them. We honor the Sidhe Lords as we honor our own Righs. Always respect the Fae, but be wary around them. They are subtle and can or will misinterpret our customs. This can lead to problems with the unknowing. Be extremely careful when accepting gifts or offers; for example you could be offered to spend a day of fun with them, however what they don't tell you is that the day is in Arcadian time or back at their home.

Vampires: The living dead, focus on the dead aspect. Can't enjoy the finer things in life, only consuming the blood of man. A corruption of the natural order, sounds like the Wyrm to me. They look like humans, which makes them hard to hunt. Just remember some tested methods: look for a lack of reflection, an aversion to garlic, crosses, and holy ground. They can be tough and fast. Even change into wolves, bats, and fog. If you need a defense, they cant cross running water or enter a dwelling without an invite. Follow your Litany, kill them where they dwell, it's a blessed mercy for whatever they used to be.

Ghosts/Wraiths: We don't have much to do with them... another thing that just doesn't seem to get that it died. They hate the living and haunt the places of their death. Again something that feeds from the living. Trap them in a mirror or properly bury the remains. If that doesn't work, try it again and again until they learn to pass on.

Witches/Sorcerers/Mages: We trust a lot of people, but these self-centered bastards with their view of the world take the cake. The bounty of Gaia is just another tool for them to use and throw away, even the abuse of Hospitality. They can warp your your body into a lesser creature, curse you, and even kill the unprepared with a look from their Evil Eye. We used to teach and guide the Druids, masters of the arts of herb and hearth, but many have turned from the Old Ways and sold their souls to the Wyrm.

The Litany, and the Fianna's interpretation of such

Garou shall not mate with Garou: This is the first of Gaia's Laws given to us, and one of the Laws that can be hard for a Tribe as passionate as ours. However, Gaia created us to be perfect, and a metis can't ever achieve that natural perfection. A corrupt or broken body houses a weakened spirit: a gateway for the Wyrm. If we could breed with each other, there would be less need to protect the Kinfolk, and without a family at home there would be no one that you wouldn't want to disappoint by dying. They are a living reminder of our crimes.

Combat the wyrm wherever it dwells and wherever it breeds: Where the Wyrm goes, we go. When the job's done, we go home. The Wyrm hates us the most. And tried to destroy us first by striking at our brothers, the White Howlers. We will not back down from this fight. The Defiler and the Corrupter are aspects of the Wyrm, do these sound natural or good to you? Destroy the Wyrmspawn. Save the tainted only if you can.

Respect the territory of another: All are expected to announce their presence when entering another's territory. When we go visiting, we respect the homes of others and treat them as we would want our own homes treated. The Traditon of Hospitality is something we deal with every day. This extends to the Kinfolk. You don't disrespect another Garou by trying to take his mate. All of nature protects their mates, and wolves mate for life.

Accept an honorable surrender: Killing each other is just stupid and depletes us. If you're pissed at someone, challenge them. Get a Philodox into the mix, sure as shit they got the level head for it. Fight it out, but don't kill your brother. Don't get me wrong, this only applies to Garou. What does the Wyrm know of honor?

Submission to those of higher station: In our blood runs the desire for a pack, and every pack has an Alpha wolf. Listen to and follow the lead of the Alpha. We are Gaia's warriors, trained and bred for discipline. Those better than you command you. Disobey their commands and suffer.

First share of the kill is for the greatest of station: This hails back to our wolf heritage and is an obvious sign of respect. A hunt goes well, feed the elders so their wisdom may continue to flow. A raid is successful, the Alpha will reward the greatest with gifts and fetishes so they may protect us. This also helps to drive us. Feel like you are getting the scraps and meager pickings? Work harder, strive to be greater than you have been. You will be rewarded.

You shall not eat the Flesh of Humans: To eat the flesh of a human or wolf is a sign of madness and Wyrm Taint. Cannibalism is a path fraught with horror. It instills fear of consumption in your Kinfolk. Who would breed with one that might eat them or their children? Do not do it.

Respect those beneath you – all are of Gaia: We are Gaia's protector and expected to show respect for all living things. If you wish to be treated with respect, show it to those around you. Submission will only get you so far. Remember you are fighting to save those that can not save themselves.

The Veil shall not be lifted: As a shepherd wards off the wolves from his flock of sheep, so too will those that protect the Humans ward off the darkness that might take them. We can easily be mistaken for this darkness. An ants nest swarms when it thinks it is under attack. Same too with Man. A single Garou is more than a match for a dozen men. But what about the forests that can be burned? Or our sacred grounds despoiled? Or the family of Kinfolk you claim as yours? Can they handle the swarming of Mans wrath? Do not reveal yourself or the fight that you must wage.

Do not suffer thy people to tend thy sickness: A pack is only as strong as its weakest link. Those around you love and respect you, they want to care for and look after you. That is the hard part of being Fianna: our family ties are strong. But when a warrior is too hurt or weakened to continue the fight, they sit the fight out. If you become a burden to those you love then all you are doing is hurting them. Go into the woods and fight the Wyrm for the last time. We're a warmhearted lot, it would be a shame to take advantage of that.

The Leader may be challenged at any time during peace: We are a strong Tribe, and we have strong leaders, but they are only strong because of the trials they have been through. If a leader is not strong enough to withstand your tests, then they are not strong enough to lead. Dominance is not a once and for all deal, it is a constant battle that keeps the family strong. It also allows you to gauge yourself against your betters, so you may grow stronger.

The Leader may not be challenged during Wartime: If we are divided we shall fall. You may not agree with the orders of your leaders, but you are expected to obey. Submission. We need all of our family to fight when the Wyrm comes knocking on the door, we cannot afford to weaken ourselves with infighting.

Ye Shall Take No Action that Causes a Caern to Be Violated: As I have said we are Gaia's protectors, our duty to give our lives for the most hallowed places of Gaia. Our Caerns are places of healing and spiritual renewal. Without them we lose our links to Gaia. The Law states action, but even inaction goes against this. To allow violators into the sacred groves of our Mother is to allow Her to be raped. If any of my family were to let that happen to my mother, my claws would rend their throats.

Stereotypes: Other Garou Tribes

We Fianna wear our hearts on our sleeves, so we're not great at politics. We tend to speak as we think and think as we find. That makes life with the other tribes a wee bit heated at times, but we get by.

Black Furies: We respect the fact that they protect the south and guard their lands as fierce or more than we. But hating all men? A mother loves all her children, just as Gaia loves all of us. Many Furies would do well to remember this. They hold true to the worship of a Threefold Goddess, aspects of Gaia. Respect them, treat them with honor, but show no weakness or arrogance. Terrible warrior women, powerful and mysterious, that can be great allies.

Bone Gnawers: They are the living embodiment of the role of the meek. Mind you, every pack needs an omega; this is not a position of dishonor, just one little respect, and they fulfill that for the Tribes. They show a mirror to our pride and remind us to respect those beneath you. Guardians of the Wyld within the cities. When you enter a town there will always be Gnawers. Look for them. They show hospitality, aid in the rough and good tales. Treat them with respect and you will find the easiest time in the Weavers playground. Pity them for their choice of homes.

Children of Gaia: They speak out for peace: peace with Man, peace between the Fera, peace within the Tribes. Too much peace makes swords into plowshares. I am all for getting along with each other, but the there is a passion that burns in the heart of every warrior and peace quenches that fire. They loathe the Wyrm, and use it to stoke their fires. The old Romans said it best: Let he who desires peace, prepare for war. Though these healers are peacemakers, never underestimate them.

Fenrir: If you are in a fight, there is no one better to have at your back. Damned pain in the asses otherwise. They respect only strength. Hotheads to a one, including the women. Can't grasp the concept of beauty without it involving blood and violence. Bloodlines that mingled with the Vikings. Most of the problems of the Garou rolled into one little package. Fiercely loyal even unto death. Show no weakness, lest they try to take your lands from you.

Red Talons: They fight the Wyrm with a dedication that rivals the Fenrir, protect their Kinfolk with a passion that might exceed ours, and hold the glory of Gaia nearly as tight as the Furies. Damned if they don't hate the Homids with equal fervor. Humans fear the dark enough without them. Their killings of men doom us by making them hate wolves. But if you ever lose touch with the wolf or the Wyld in you, hunt them down, for they will show you why Gaia made us only half-human.

Shadow Lords: Some would tell you to not trust the Shadow Lords. They would be right, in part. They are the right hand of the Silver Fangs. If our leaders trust them, then we should let them do they duty. I just don't like the way they do that duty. Never giving the whole tale, deception and subtlety, with tongues so sharp that our Galliards are put to shame. But they are Garou and love Gaia without a doubt. They just do whatever it takes to win the fight. And sometimes that just leaves more darkness behind than I like.

Silent Striders: It is hard to trust them with evil always nipping at their heels. But they on more than one occasion have proved critical. Either with a well timed arrival during a fight, or knowledge of an impending attack. They tell tales of places I will never see and fights I will never experience. Drink deep with them, but never try to to follow them. They hate the leeches more than any others. They have lore of the spirits of the dead. If you need knowledge or a message gotten through, there are no better Garou.

Silver Fangs: We sing the glories of our kings. The hardship of leadership is the burden they shoulder. Some have buckled, becoming tyrants that demand our obedience unwilling to prove themselves capable of leading. They respect us and our ways, we honor them and respect them. No one is above a jib or two. Test them, make them prove they can lead. But follow them when they do.

Warders of Man: They are the saddest of ours, clinging to the cities of Man and the Weaver. Lost within the webs of the cities, caring only to protect Man. They have forgotten the bounty that Gaia created for them. The stink of the Weaver is always on them, even some hint of the Wyrm. Watch them closely, they have lost the wolf and become dogs. Urrah to a one.

Fera

Fera: Legends tell of a time that Garou and the Fera roamed freely alongside each other. After the War of Rage many of Gaia's children feel to our claws or the temptations of the Wyrm. The Galliards can tell the tales of old, but this is what most of the Nation remembers of the Fera.

Ananasi: Everyone knows the task given to us by Gaia, but what was her purpose for the Spikerkin? I know very few tales of their kind, but we gave them up for dead after the War of Rage.

Bastet: We rarely see the Bastet, something that is not difficult to comprehend. Their solitary nature during the War of Rage led them to violent deaths at our claws. Gaia chose them to be her eyes and ears, and to keep her secrets. There are things they know that we shall never. When you encounter one listen carefully, remember everything, they do not tell tales lightly. The only breed of Bastet we have had any regular interaction with are the Celican. They are very like us, close ties to the fae and given to passionate revelry. But they also have our pride, toying with those that hunted them with fae magics until they could not control their Rage. We drove their maneless lion kinfolk into near extinction. For this they hold an abiding hatred for the Garou.

Corax: The wereravens are one of the few Fera that have relatively peaceful relations with the Garou. During the War of Rage, few were able to stand against us. The Corax saw this and reacted by working with us. Some rumors say that they worked both sides, helping the Fera to escape the Garou. Nothing can be proven. However as a showing of the legends as ravens as harbingers of doom, they have taken a great interest in a prophecy. The Prophecies of Shadow, given by the Red Talons. Many are trying to deduce the meaning of the prophecies, and have begun to use the Corax to to spread information between each other. So if you want to hear about things from distant lands, or just need a good listening drinking buddy, the Corax are always willing to lend an ear.

Gurahl: The greatest healers of all Gaia's children, far greater than even the eldest Child of Gaia. But they would not tell the secrets of the many Gifts they were given. This led our Silver Fangs to demand the secrets, so we could better defend Gaia. In their refusal we turned against them. Wild accusations akin to being in league with the Wyrm and no longer serving Gaia fanned the flames or our Rage. We struck the first blow and started the War of Rage with the Gurahl. Since that time the Great Totem of Bear has yet to forgive our transgressions. No Garou may have Bear as a pack totem. And even the Jagglings and Gafflings shun our kind. They seek to see if the Garou can act honorably and control their Rage. We the Fianna can act with amazing levels of honor. It is our passions that get the best of us, and show the weakness to the Bears.

Ratkin: The Garou claimed rule of the humans during the Imergium and despised the Rats for interfering. They have the duty under Gaia to keep the population of humans in check. We label their use of disease as a sign of coming to close to the ways of the Wyrm. The War of Rage saw the fall of one of their Auspices, their bards. Our Tribe feels the greatest sorrow for the loss of great knowledge and talesingers. If you see one there are a dozen in the shadows. Beware the hatred that they harbor for our kind. Trust not a one.

Rokea: Tales and legends. The seafaring Fenrir and Furies tell of sharks so monstrous that they could swallow whole long boats, or bite through hulls to get at the men in the ship. Many an Elder Galliard will scare the cubs with these tales, predators even greater than werewolves. Just have some respected fear for the sea, she can kill you without needing these beasts. If you see a fin how are you going to ask if it reveres Gaia?

What the Different Ranks Should Know

Cliath: You know that Stag is our Tribal Totem and minor spirits in Stag's Brood. Basic knowledge of the Fianna histories like why we hate the Fallen with blinding fervor and the rudiments of what happened to the White Howlers. That we have close ties to the Fae. And possibly recite your own Lineage with little difficulty.

Fostern: You should be versed in the knowledge of the Fae including names of some types, weakness to pure Iron, what trods are, the names of the courts and existence of the Arcadian Gateway. Recitation a few of the older tales of the Fianna. You know exactly why the Howlers fell to the Wyrm. Can find the Fianna Homeland and recite your own Lineage by rote. Also knowing what the Ar-Righ's and Council of Songs' duties are.

Adren: You know that some Fae still exist on Earth. You know where the Arcadian Gateway is, and may be able to travel there. May know of the location of a few active trods. Knows how to travel to the Fianna Homeland with little difficulty. You know how best to approach the major spirits of Stag's Brood, and the minor ones give you some respect, but not much.

Athro: Some Tribal secrets are still beyond your grasp... but not too far. You are familiar with Fae courts and their customs. Can find secret pathways to the Arcadian Gateway. You know all the best areas of the Tribal Homeland, especially where to get the best ale. You know some of the most Ancient Songs of the Fianna and can recite them from time to time. Stag's Brood is known to you: all of them. The major spirits of his Brood may even respect you for your knowledge.

Elder: You know almost all the Ancient Songs of the Fianna, and can recite those you know from memory. You have a vast knowledge of the Fae. You are on a first name basis with Stag, he sometimes even asks your opinion, and all among his Brood afford you a great measure of respect. You can travel throughout the Tribal Homeland blindfolded.
