The history of massage is extensive, as is the history of medicine as a whole. While evidence suggests that massage was practiced in the beginning of recorded history, it is not known what the exact origin of this practice is. Some historians think that massage probably developed out of an actual Indian spiritual practice referred to as "Yoga," but there is no proof of this. This isn't well documented. However it is clear that Yoga was a popular practice in India and that its practitioners spread their practices around the world.

Three millennia ago, the earliest evidence of massage therapy can be traced back to India's earliest texts. It is believed to be approximately 3000 BCE or at a minimum. Although massage is a popular practice among Ayurvedic healers but it was also practiced by Hindus. However, their purposes were quite different from ours.

There is no clear-cut evidence of the date when massage therapy began in the west, but we do know that earlier civilizations like Egypt used a form of massage, referred to as "Lavan" or "Tui Na," which was used for healing purposes. It was only as a late addition to Western medicine that "massage" became a more holistic healing practice. Early Chinese and Indian medicine focused on the whole body, not just specific areas. Many of the techniques we call massage therapy were not developed in these cultures. However, many of these techniques, including massage oil application and acupressure were developed in those cultures and later absorbed into Asian culture.

In China, it is believed that the earliest reference to Chinese massage is the legend of the Yellow Emperor, who was believed to have the body of a 15 year old girl treated with a peach flower. Another legend claims that the Yellow Emperor may have received this treatment through eating a peach flower from the lap of Jade Buddha. Another version tells of an Chinese herbalist who was able to cure blindness in a man using a paste composed of the roots and leaves of a single flower, called the "Nan Hu" that he obtained from a well in the royal gardens of the Nanking region. The fact that the "Nan Hu" paste healed the blind man is suggestive of the healing properties of the Chinese tradition of massage, even though his use of herbs and other treatments is questionable.

Between the sixth and thirteenth centuries an Italian doctor known as Marco Polo is said to introduce to the Chinese court the "Swedish massage." According to this myth, Marco Polo and his translator brought back to China an ancient manuscript written in the Gothic language that was written centuries before by an Indian doctor who was referring to the Swedish massage technique that was exclusive to India. This information was then combined with other details to create a massage method known as Yoga which means "the method". According to the legend, the two Asian doctors combined yoga with Swedish massage techniques to create what we know today as the Swedish massage.

Today massage therapists are using the techniques that are described in both Sanskrit texts and the ancient texts on massage to bring a distinctive range of energy and touch to the massage therapies they perform. Some of these techniques are built on the ancient "Laying on Hands," in which the massage therapist placed his hands in prayer with the hands of the patient, praying for a patient's health and also for the body's resistance to diseases. While some of these methods are getting more popular, others remain controversial. For instance, certain treatments that involve touch, such as Reiki use the patient's own spiritual energy, 천안출장안마 thought , and willpower to help heal the patient. Other therapies, like the Swedish massage, which involves intense pressure and kneading techniques, are still considered controversial

>As massage therapists discover the healing power of touch but they also learn that the massage therapist should not just reach across the patient's skin. By learning how to relax the entire body using his hands, the massage therapist can assist the patient in avoiding muscular contractions during the massage therapy session, which could bring many health benefits. Learning to relax the body has also proven beneficial for athletes who wish to prevent injuries from happening during exercise. Massage therapy classes can aid athletes to reduce muscle pain and discomfort

>Another of the massage techniques from ancient Greece is the shiatsu. This ancient form of medicine employs finger pressure and acupressure on the fingers as well as thumb pressure, and even voice to treat a vast variety of illnesses and conditions. Shiatsu originated in China, but is now utilized all over the world. Shiatsu classes continue be offered throughout the world, despite the concept of shiatsu might have changed slightly due to globalization.
