The short version of the entire story is that Mojang put up a post, which we've just linked to but returns an error 404 "not found" error, and then takes it down. It clarified that players who had bought both the Bedrock and Java versions of Minecraft prior to June 6 2022, would be able to get an expensive Vanilla Cape.

The page was removed just a few hours later, and is now accessible only on the Wayback Machine. This is quite a mystery. The article isn't particularly alarming and it doesn't look to have been beforehand announced.
