Robert Singer WJC CEO during a visit to Moldova emphasizes the importance of Holocaust preservation and adopting an antisemitism definition that is universal

CHISINAU (MOLDOVA) Chisinau (MOLDOVA). World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with top government officials and leaders of the local Jewish community in Moldova. They discussed topics such as the preservation of Holocaust memories and education, safety of the Jewish community, and fighting antisemitism on all levels. WJC also had the President Mikhail Mirilashvili, EuroAsian Jewish Congress President and President of Moldovan Jewish communities Alexander Bilinkis. Emmanuil Grinshpun Haim Ben Yaakov was the EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director.

"The World Jewish Congress thanks the Moldovan government for its gracious welcoming and expressed dedication to the preservation of the memories of the Holocaust," said Singer. "Our Moldovan community, while small and devoted and devoted, is very strong. We call on Moldova to make anti-Semitism at the top of its list. We are available to help when needed. We are looking forward to continued collaboration with the government and to ensure the health of our community."

The following day, Singer met with Tudor Ulianovschi (Moldova's Foreign Minister) and highlighted the importance of establishing a definition for antisemitism as defined by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also spoke out on the need for public condemnations to are made against anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi also emphasized the Moldovan authorities' commitment to establishing an inclusive society to every citizen regardless of ethnicity. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi as a positive co-operation with the Republic of Moldova.

Emmanuil Grinshpun The foreign minister also noted that in 2016, the Chisinau parliament accepted the final report from the International Commission on Holocaust Studies, chaired and supervised by Elie Wiesel. In January of 2017 the government ratified an Action Plan for its implementation.

Singer and the WJC delegation met on Wednesday with Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed opportunity for restitution as well as economic possibilities in Moldova in relation to Jewish property, cemeteries that are in dire need of reconstruction, kosher slaughter, and potential tourist ventures to benefit the local Jewish center. The minister expressed his intention to advocate for the protection of Jewish cemeteries. The first meeting was with 10 sites.

Singer and WJC representatives met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training of teachers in Holocaust education. The meeting also addressed the creation of the creation of a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of memorials to Holocaust victims, and the importance of maintaining Jewish cemetery in a respectable and proper way. Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her support in the fields of education, Holocaust commemoration and in creating a long-lasting and successful collaboration between the Jewish community and the Ministry.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Mirilashvili, Singer, and Bilinkis have also met with the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova, Vlad Plahotniuc, for talks on relationships with the Jewish community as well as the Republic of Moldova's ties bilaterally with the State of Israel.

Singer met with the Rabbis from the Jewish communities of Moldova. He discussed key questions regarding religious practices and services. Singer also focused on ways to improve Jewish everyday lives in all aspects.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Moldova is home to approximately 20000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was devastated by the Shoah as well as a civil war, is now flourishing and spreading across the country. There has been a large growth of a national self awareness and a return to their ancestral roots through the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are celebrated in a variety of ways, including literature and musical composition. The Moldovan Jewish Community, an part of the World Jewish Congress, represents the Moldovan Jewish community.
