id="mod_9689751">Newbery Book List by Grade Level Appropriateness
The Newbery Award is given, on a yearly basis, by the Association for Library Service, which is a division of the American Library Association. The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century bookseller John Newbery. Since 1922, the award has been given to the author who has contributed the most to American literature for children. This site provides a comprehensive list that chronicles the Newbery winners from each year and provides links to purchase many of these books. In addition, links are provided, when available, to literature units that have been created for these books.

In addition to the winning books, all of the honorary books, for each year, are listed. Many of these books are excellent and well worth reading as well. This is particularly true of certain books, specifically many of the books that were written by authors who eventually ended up winning the award for a different novel.

I've rated the Newbery books based on input given by hundreds of teachers, multiple reviews found throughout the Internet, and student comments from over a thousand students on books they've read. Additional input and book reviews are always welcomed and reviewed. Just leave a comment at the bottom of this site!

As a parent of 3 teens, a former 4-8th grade ELA teacher, and a current 6-8th grade Library Media Specialist, I have to reply that although this list was a good idea, placing a singular grade level for each book was not. You are pigeon-holing each book when in reality, each book should at the very least, be given a range of grades and age-level-readers. Plus, many of the grades you placed for each book are far too low - especially for the book, The Giver, since it contains content that in my long experiences teaching with it, is often disturbing to 7th and 8th graders! While the vocabulary level of many of these books is read-able by the elementary grade levels you listed, the content/themes and literary devices used in most are higher middle grades-high school ability/interest level, instead. Again, this list was a good idea, but you really should adjust it to include a range of appropriate grades since parents or new educators who come across your list may take this to mean that "only" students in that grade should read it or that "all" students in that one grade should read it.

Wendy,

Thank you for your input. The ratings are based on input given from hundreds of teachers and thousands of students.

I have considered changing my rating system to stars or some other symbol. Perhaps it's time for a change.

Thank you.

Not sure where you came up with ratings. I did not care for Dead End in Norvelt and certainly wouldn't have rated it higher than titles like The Wheel in the School or Maniac Magee, but the ratings would be easier to see if they were something besides exclamation points. They are hard to see.

I have a goal to read all of the newbery award winners and this site is extremely helpful! Thank You!

Hi,

Hatchet is a great book. It is on my fifth grade list. Unfortunately, it didn't win the Newbery Award, but I heartily recommend it.

Thank you. I appreciate your input. Without input these lists will never improve.

I'm so glad you like the site. There are a lot of great Newbery books to read. I just finished Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH with my class. It's the first time I've ever read that book, and I really recommend it.

Best wishes. I'm glad you've been enjoying the site.

I love the Newberry Award books. My children are all grown now but I have most of the books in the Wrinkle in Time books and I also have the full set of The Tales of Narnia. I don't think the Narnia was Newberry Award, not sure.

I saw some of these as movies. I have always loved children's books even though I never read any of them as a child growing up--or I don't remember reading them. I read them while my children were growing up. Thanks for the hub. I will come back and see what more books I can read.

I just took a look at the links below this comment box and YES I have/had a gifted child. She is expecting her second child and her first wil be two in a couple of weeks. He seems to be gifted too. We shall see.

Thank you so much! I made the list, because I couldn't find one either. I'm glad it's helpful. You made my day.

This is what I've been waiting for FOREVER! Finding the Newbery Awards linked to Grade/Age appropriateness. Bless you! I started a blog just for this issue and now I will link your post to my blog with credit and link to your blog, of course. THANK YOU!
