The first question could be considered almost a no-brainer, but it is one a surprising number of people fail to ask when purchasing used tires, used cars, etc. Ask why they are selling the tires rather than using them. If there isn't a good answer for this, get out fast! Also ask where they got the tires. A cagey or vague response could mean that they were purchased used to begin with, or that it was so long ago the seller doesn't remember.
This is one of the most common uses for recycled tires. If you have a small vegetable plot or want to add some new flowerbeds to your landscaping, an old tire could be just what you need. Because the tire absorbs a lot of heat during the day, it makes an ideal environment for seedlings to grow. During the winter months, the tires can easily be covered to protect young plants from the cold.
When this happens the tire is either replaced with a new one or the old one is repaired depending on the damage. If the tire is too damaged it is scrapped and sent for recycling.
In general, always buy tires at least in pairs. Never put one new tire on one wheel when the other has considerable wear. Generally, it's best to put your new tires on the front to take advantage of better steering and handling with a new tire. But if your car is rear wheel drive, be aware that badly worn tires in the back will cause your car to skid and lose control quickly in wet or slippery conditions. If you rotate your tires regularly, say every 7500 or 10,000 miles at least, then your tires should all wear out around the same time and it's best to replace all four as a set.
