Overview

Vanilla Minecraft can be fun however it can become a bit stale after a while. Being able to add new features to the game without waiting for Mojang to implement them can be the key to easing any boredom you may have on your server. This is where plugins be able to help.

Plugins are software that runs on servers and adds features to the server. It is not necessary to make changes on the client side like mods. There are tens of thousands of plugins that are accessible on the internet, so there's virtually no moment when you don't have something you're looking for or require.

To install plugins, your server needs to be running Spigot or Paper. Both will accept plugins from the Bukkit and Spigot websites. If you are unsure how to change your server version you can look up our tutorial on this here.

How to Install Plugins Through the Plugin List

Apex Hosting has a great selection of plugins from Spigot and Bukkit that can be integrated directly into your panel. This is the simplest way to install plugins on Java servers.

1. Login to your Apex Hosting Panel and select the server you want to install the plugins on. 2. Select Plugin List on the left side of the panel. 3. On this page, you can choose either Bukkit or Spigot as your source. The only thing that may differ is the results you get. Both plugins must work on the server. 4. You can search by name or category for plugins. Click on the plugin you want to install once you've found it.

5. Now at the top of the page, verify that there is a compatible version of your server's version. e.g. If your server is running Paper 1.16.5 you must ensure that you have an option that says compatibility with 1.16. 6. Once you verify there is an appropriate version, you can choose it from the Version dropdown menu. Next, click on the install button on the right. Check your server console to confirm that the process is completed.

7. After the process has been completed then restart your server to allow the plugin to load.

How to Install Plugins using FTP

Sometimes, the plugin list may not include the features you require. In that case , you might have to look online for the direct download of the plugin's Jar file. There are many popular sites to download plugins such as the Dev Bukkit site, the SpigotMC website, and sometimes directly from developers' sites or github pages. Generally the best method to locate a plugin online is to simply search the name or keywords of the plugin.

1. You can download the plugin jar file from the internet.

2. Log in to your panel by going to the FTP File Access tab. 3. Minecraft Blog After logging in, find the plugins folder and click it.

4. Once you're inside the plugins folder, click upload to the left, then drag into the jar file.

5. Once the file has reached 100% upload, you may return to your main panel. 6. Restart the server to allow the plugin to load.

Common Issues

Plugins Not Loading:

Sometimes after you restart the server, the plugins might not be loaded. You can verify whether a plugin has been loaded by running /plugins in-game. If it's green, then it's likely to be loaded. If it's not in the list or red , then there may be an issue. Make sure the plugin is compatible with your server version and then check the plugin page to ensure that it doesn't have any dependencies. Sometimes, if you restart the server and then look at the console output, it will tell you what error it's giving you, or what plugin it needs to work.

Plugin List Download Failure:

If you are trying to download a plugin using the included Plugin List on your dashboard and it's giving you errors, such as it might say that it is having trouble downloading the plugin it could be an issue with the source site of the plugin. If this happens it is recommended that you manually install the plugin on the server by following the FTP section of this guide.

No Plugins Folder:

If you try to manually install plugins onto your server but you are unable to find the plugins folder, it is likely that your server isn't able to allow plugins. Or you may have forgotten about restarting after changing versions to Spigot/Paper. Minecraft Servers Check the Jar File dropdown in your panel to verify that your server is compatible. Certain versions that are compatible include: Spigot, Paper, Magma, Thermos, and Cauldron.
