There will be an Appeals Procedure
Players can now report chat chat messages in multiplayer games with the new system, but the community is concerned about the implications.
A Mojang community manager has said that the company will not be reversing its decision to implement a controversial new player reporting feature. The manager also demanded that the company stop the harassment of Mojang employees.
MojangMeesh made a post on Reddit to clarify that although Mojang Studios values feedback from its players, it isn't going to alter the design principles Mojang Studios follows-this includes the upcoming report system. Ejac They asked users to stop "following Mojang employees here on Reddit" and harass them in irrelevant threads. The post has received more than 2000 downvotes as of writing.
Minecraft players have been arguing about the new player reporting system since it was announced just a month ago but it was finally implemented in yesterday's 1.19.1 update. It allows players on both private and Mojang-hosted servers to flag inappropriate chat messages in chat for review by Mojang investigators, which could result in bans and suspensions for players that violate Minecraft's guidelines for community members, even on servers hosted by a third party. Many gamers are concerned that this system could result in bans on players for messages that are taken out of context and, more generally, that it gives Microsoft too many options to control what content is displayed on its platform.
I don't think that their argument is deficient even if a few players are acting badly about it. It's hard to imagine an environment where the system doesn't prohibit anyone because a joke between friends was misinterpreted. Although there will be appeals, it is also true that there are a lot of misconceptions regarding the system's operation. You'll find people complaining about their chat being monitored by Microsoft or dreading the possibility that they'll get banned for slurs in any thread. None of these are feasible according to Mojang's FAQ on the reporting system.
Mojang is in a an impasse on this issue. A thread from Stuart Duncan, who manages an autism-friendly Minecraft server for children with autism-reveals how much awful stuff Minecraft hosts on a regular basis. Ejac Duncan showcases studies and reports from the ADL, the BBC, and others which tell tales of racists and predators using Minecraft in a way that is abominable. It seems crucial to provide tools to stop this kind of kind of behavior. While it's true that 'think of the children" scare stories are used to justify reactionary policies in real life, a tool that allows users to report dodgy chat messages in Minecraft isn't exactly the tip of a draconian wedge.
If you are saying "no one asked" for this, "the entire community hates this" or "no-one requires this", please stop trying to be an advocate for everyone. "If you are worried about the exploitation of others, that's excellent. You can too. It's not perfect however, real people can be saved by it. July 27 2022
In other Minecraft news, Mojang has announced that the game won't be featuring NFTs since they are incompatible with the "values of inclusion in the creative process". The move at least received an enthusiastic response from the player base but there's been no confirmation yet as to what the AI they've trained to play Minecraft thinks about it.
