What should you expect?
It is possible to have breast augmentation performed at an outpatient hospital or in a surgery center. The majority of the time, you'll be allowed to return home the very same day. The procedure rarely requires an inpatient stay.

Breast augmentation is sometimes performed under local anesthesia. This means you're awake even though your breasts are massaged. The majority of the time the procedure is performed during general anesthesia, in which you're sleeping during the surgery. Your plastic surgeon will discuss the various anesthesia options together with you.

During the process
Your plastic surgeon will make one cut (incision) to place the implant for your breast.

The fold below your breasts (inframammary).
Under your arm (axillary)
Your nupple (periareolar).
After cutting an incision, surgeons will then separate the breast tissue from the connective tissue and muscles of your chest. This will result in a pocket behind or in front the outermost muscle in the chest wall (pectoral muscles). The surgeon will then place the implant within the pocket, and then place it over your nipple.

Once inserted, saline implants can be filled with sodium water that is sterile. Implants made of silicone are filled prior to being filled with silicone gel.

When the implant is in position when the implant is in place, the surgeon will close the incision with stitches (sutures) -and then bandage it with the adhesive of skin and surgical tape.

After the procedure
The swelling and soreness will likely last for a few weeks following surgery. It is also possible to get bruises. Scarring is likely to fade with time, but it will not disappear completely.

It may be beneficial to wear the sports bra or compression bandage as you heal. This will give you extra support and a better position for your breast implants. You might also be prescribed pain medication by your doctor.

Follow the directions from your doctor for returning to normal routine. If you don't have an activity that requires physical exertion it is possible to return to work within some weeks. For at least two weeks avoid strenuous activities that can cause a rise in your pulse or blood pressure. While your breasts are healing, keep in mind that they will be susceptible to physical contact or movements that cause a jarring.
