Minecraft Says no to NFTs because they Causescarcity And Exclusion
Minecraft players Minecraft won't be allowed to purchase game content like worlds, persona items, skins and other mods in the form of NFTs.
Minecraft the most-loved video game ever, will not support NFTs because they "create an environment of haves and the not-so-haves".
Mojang Studios, a Minecraft developer, stated yesterday (20 July) that NFTs are against the game's core values in a well-written post on the Minecraft site.
The company claimed that NFTs and blockchain technology create digital ownership that is based on scarcity and exclusion. This is not in the spirit of Minecraft values of creative inclusion, playing together, and sharing resources.
"The speculation-based pricing of NFTs and the investment mentality that surrounds them takes the focus away from the game and encourages profit-seeking. We believe this is incompatible with long-term joy, and success for our players." This Just In
Minecraft has said that the statement was in response to the feedback of members of the community who wanted clarifications on the studio's stance regarding NFTs and blockchain.
The move means that, unlike many other virtual world games Minecraft does not allow blockchain integrations in its client and server applications. NFTs are not allowed to be used in the game for content such as worlds, skins and persona items, in addition to other mods.
Mojang is a Microsoft-owned business has also stated that it is concerned about third-party NFTs. These NFTs could be unreliable and end up costing players who buy them. It outlined scenarios where third-party NFT managers could "disappear suddenly" or NFTs could "be sold at fraudulently or artificially high prices".
"We recognise that creation inside our game is intrinsically valuable, and we strive to create a market where those values are acknowledged."
Online gaming has seen an increase in interest in blockchain technologies such as NFTs. This topic was also discussed at Future Human earlier in the year.
Companies such as GameStop have expressed their confidence in NFTs as an important element in the future of gaming, and have launched their own NFT marketplace.
However other companies aren't going all in just yet. EA's CEO has said that blockchain and NFTs could be the future of gaming. However, he recently said: "Right now it's not something we're driving against."
