Mojang's breakout smash Minecraft came in second place on a Google-issued list of the most popular YouTube search terms of 2014, placing it just behind "music" in terms of search frequency.

According to Google the term "Minecraft" was more frequently searched on YouTube in 2014 than the term "movies." Minecraft Gaming star PewDiePie also ranked among YouTube's top searches in 2014, lagging searches for Disney's Frozen and for the artists Drake and Beyonce.

Google reports that users are increasingly searching for gaming-related content and are engaging more frequently with them even though a majority of the people surveyed do not consider themselves gamers. YouTube videos that fall under the "Gaming" category topped the service's Top 10 Most Popular list on 25 different days in October of 2014.

"A Google Consumer Survey fielded in October 2014 of people who claimed to watch gaming videos on YouTube found that only a small portion of this group (37 percent) consider themselves gamers"" the report says. "When asked about the reasons they watch gaming videos, people mentioned entertainment and humor as well as learning new strategies or tips.

The report continues: "We also wanted out why they watched the videos of creators like SkyDoesMinecraft and PewDiePie. Many of them replied"because they're hilarious! These videos were even compared to stand-up comedy. One of the game's upcoming creators summarized his enthusiasm with the following analogy: "You don't need to play soccer to be a fan of TV."
